After the assassination November 22, 1963, the car was impounded for evidence. In December 1963, the White House approved a plan to revamp the car, with work completed May 1, 1964. It was rearmored and had a new engine and electronic communication equipment installed. It also received a permanent , nonremovable top. The car underwent major modifications again in January 1967 and remained in service until early 1977.
